Help Us Identify A Strange Bird

separator

Karen Wrote:

Greetings from Waterloo, Ontario!

My parents have just called from a > town called Rotunda, on the south-central gulf coast of Florida. They have had several "visitors" over the past few days, including a heron and several egrets.

They also have a strange looking bird that is mystifying them! It is 24-36inches tall, snowy white body with black under wings and a very small and ugly) grey-brown head with a black mark running across (looks like earmuffs!). The description is from my mom, as I haven't actually seen it!

Do you any idea what it is?

Thank you!

I believe what your folks are seeing is our famous endangered Wood Stork. Check out this photo...

This photo was taken by our Chief Photographer at Titusville's Rotary Riverfront Park. This park is a great place to take a quick stop and see an excellent variety of birds. This small park includes a pier that extends about 500 feet out into the Indian River (Inter Coastal Waterway). There are three extensions to the pier each extending another 100 feet south from the main pier. It is on these extensions that the birds may be seen. On a typical visit you may see the following:
