Scrub Ridge Trail

at Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

The Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge has recently opened a new hiking trail. The Scrub Ridge Trail takes you through a habitat that is host to the Florida Scrub Jay. The Florida Scrub Jay is an endangered species because of habitat loss.

The trail winds south from its starting point and takes you on a walking tour through Palmetto, Pines, Oak and scattered Sabal Palm.

Things to Look For

• Florida Scrub Jay
• Bobcat
• Eastern (Rufous-sided) Towhee
• Bobwhite
• Ground Dove
• Grey Catbird
• Great Horned Owl
• Northern Mockingbird
• Northern Cardinal
• White Tailed Deer
• Gopher Tortoise
• Wild Boar
• Various migrating warbler species from Fall through Spring

DIRECTIONS

• From I-95: Exit 80, east on Garden Street to US 1.
• Cross US 1 and travel east on SR402/406 across the Max A. Brewer Causeway.
• Take State Road 402 past the Visitors Center to the intersection with State Road 3.
• Turn (left) north on SR3 and travel approximately 2 miles.
• Watch for the Scrub Ridge Train sign on the right hand side of the road.
• Turn onto the dirt road and park in the small parking area.
• The trail starts to the south of the kiosk.
