Subject: Waiting
We have a Mockingbird nest with three chicks about five days old in the glove
compartment of our golf cart. From when they first started to build the nest
till now which is about three weeks we have not been able to use the golf cart.
How much longer do you think we have to wait?
Thank you
Peter
Peter:
The typical wait time from hatching to when the young birds are ready to fly (fledge) is about three weeks. My best guess is that you have about two more weeks to wait.
The interesting part is when the parents feed the babies. They will both provide small insects and berries if available. When the chicks are very small, up to about two weeks old the parents will crush the insects into a paste and feed the babies this paste.
Another interesting typical behavior is the parents carrying the fecal sack containing the babies waste away from the nest.
