Subject: Any idea what this bird is?
We were at the Kennedy Space Center last week and saw loads of birds begging for food. They were about 12" long, skinny, sleek, golden nutmeg-colored throat and breast, with long legs and a dark back. They appeared to be very tame, not minding at all anyone going within a foot or so - obviously, they know people bring food!
I've looked in my eastern USA bird book and can't even find anything close. They were attractive, although perhaps a nuisance.
Any thoughts?
Many thanks!
Susan R.
Susan:
Great description of your mystery bird.
My best guess: The bird that, I think, best describes what you saw is the female Boat-tailed Grackle. There are always there at KSC, and love it when they get a handout from the visitors.
To confirm what I think you saw, take a look at the following photograph of a Female Grackel:
Thank you for visiting our website.
