I live about 50 miles east of Memphis. We have a
small pond in the front yard, and I saw a bird that was shaped like the
Green Heron, but its neck was purple and the rest of his body was
bluish grey. Do you have any idea what it might be? We have a lot
(sort of) of wetlands around the Memphis area and in the past few years
I have been noticing egrets and others birds that I don't remember
seeing as a child. It almost seems as if the coastal birds are
expanding more and more northward.
I will appreciate any info. you might have on my mysterious bird?
Oh, we also have several cranes that occasionally come to our pond.
Thanks,
Cindy
Our best guess is that your mysterious bird is a Little Blue Heron. If
you check out a field guide for birds, you can confirm the ID.
We're glad to hear that the wetland bird populations are improving in
your area.
