The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge is located on Florida's west coast near the towns of Homosassa Springs and Crystal River. This extensive refuge is about a 1 hour drive from either Orlando to the East, or Tampa to the South.
This wildlife refuge is comprised of over 31,000 acres of saltwater bays, estuaries and brackish bays. It was established in 1943 to primarily benefit wintering waterfowl.
The refuge provides habitat for over 250 species of birds, over 50 species of reptiles and at least 25 different species of mammals.
It is only accessible by boat.
A wildlife sanctuary has been defined within the boundries of the refuge. This sanctuary is
comprised of 7,600 acres and is closed to public access from October 15 through February
15 each year. The sanctuary is delineated by "Area Closed" signs.
