Hope,

First, do not cut down the dead trees. These make ideal locations for owl nest cavities.

Second, We have several species of owl native to our area:
Eastern Screech Owl - Will use a Red-bellied Woodpecker nest box
Great Horned Owl - Likes to use empty Eagle nests and Red-tailed Hawk nests.
Barrn Owl - A cavity nester, but will use nests of hawks, owls, squirrels
Barn Owl - Also a cavity nester
Burrowing Owl - Does not use tree cavities.

Because of their nocturnal, secretive habits you may already have owl on your property or owls that already hunt in your property and area.

You can find more information from any good birding field guide, We have several listed on our web site:
http://www.cfbw.com/amzbooklist.shtml

Third, another excellent reference guide for determining what types of habitat owls like can be found in "The Birders Handbook" by Ehrlich, Dobkin and Wheye
ISBN number: 0-671-65989-8 and the "Sibley Guide of Bird Life and Behavior" by David Allen Sibley ISBN number: 0-697-45123-4

The Loquat is a good source of fruit for several types of birds as well as the Beauty Berry bush. The Beauty Berry has its fruit late in the season and is a good source of food when other types plants have finished for the season.

The Northern Mockingbird, and the Orchard Oriole like sliced oranges and will come when you keep a small, fresh supply for them.

Good luck.
Thank you for visiting the Central Florida Bird Watchers web site and for your great question.
