What kind of bird is it?

Angel Writes...

-----Original Message----- From: ANGEL To: Subject: Bird ??????

Hi, My boyfriend is a truck driver and his run is to Florida..I have been on several trips with him...I have seen a white bird that is around water or in cattle fields....From a distance it looks as if it is about 10 to 12 inches in height...I am not really sure because I have not been able to see one up close....With just this much information do you think you can tell me what kind of bird it is? Thank you very much...

Angel:

What you are probably seeing is a Common Egret also known as the Cattle Egret. One way to be sure is to look for a yellow beak and a slight tan coloration on the back of the head and back of the bird. They are very common around in pastures and along the roadside. The other possibility is that you are seeing two different birds the Cattle Egret and a Snowy Egret. The Snowy Egret is a wading bird that feeds in shallow water. The Snowy Egret has a black beak, bright yellow feet and looks like it needs a haircut. There is a picture of the Snowy Egret on our web site. Snowy Egret
